Dame Mary Peters challenged Northern Ireland businesses, Sporting Organisations and talented young athletes to help raise vital funds for her sporting charity by taking part in an all-day ‘spinathon’ and they did it!
The ‘Spin to a Million’ event brought 31 teams on spin bikes together to collectively cycle for 1,000,000 seconds – 278 hours – in Olympia Leisure Centre, Better Gym on Friday, 26th January, in aid of the Mary Peters Trust.
Bike Teams had the opportunity to ‘buy a bike’ for the day, form a team of however many members they chose and to keep the bike peddled constantly from 8.30am-5.30pm. Olympic gold medal winner Dame Mary Peters along with Michael McKillop (4 time Paralympic Gold Medallist) launched the event and a host of her celebrity friends including Cool FM’s Breakfast Radio Presenter Pete Snodden, Miss Northern Ireland, Anna Henry and sports personalities were there on the day to take part and to provide encouragement to competitors.

All the proceeds will go towards supporting the vital work the Mary Peters Trust does in developing elite young athletes across Northern Ireland.

The spinathon is part of the Trust’s overarching ‘Race to a Million’ campaign, which aims to raise £1m over the next two years to ensure the charity can continue its ongoing commitment to furthering the careers of young sportsmen and women.

Dame Mary Peters commented:
“We did it!! We hit the million seconds, everyone rose to the challenge.  We couldn’t have done it without Better Gyms supporting us, the spin instructors who donated their time were so motivational and really kept everyone going. This ‘Spin to a Million’ is to ensure funding remains in place to enhance the development of our Carl Framptons and Bethany Firths of the future.  I want to thank everyone involved.“
There were team and individual prizes awarded on the day.
The Mary Peters Trust has supported thousands of athletes, both able bodied and disabled, to help realise their sporting dreams over the past four decades.
