Lady Mary Peters was thrilled to join current and past pupils as well as staff at a special School Assembly in St Michael’s Primary School, Ravenhill Road, Belfast marking the school’s 50th birthday.
Principal, Bronagh McCann welcomed Mary explaining, “Fifty years ago Lady Mary visited our school on Sports Day and it’s an honour for us to share this special ‘Sports Day’ week of celebrations with her, just like our boys and girls did 50 years ago.
“The Mary Peters Trust, like St Michael’s, is commemorating its 50th anniversary and it’s wonderful to share our celebrations with Mary’s Trust which supports young people both disabled and able-bodied to achieve their sporting dreams and ambitions.
“Happy 50th Birthday to the Mary Peters Trust and to St Michael’s Primary School.”
Michelle Cody-O’Connor, a former pupil of St Michael’s was also a special guest and told stories about her early recollections from schooldays.
“I have very fond memories and especially our very special Sports Day when Lady Mary Peters was the Olympic Gold medallist and presented me with a silver medal which I won doing the high jump.”
The Assembly concluded with a video message sent from USA by another former pupil Noreen Connolly who is still good friends with Michelle Cody and Michelle in her words to current pupils at St Michael’s said:
“Stop and look at who you are sitting beside, because you too could be friends with the same person in 50 years’ time, the way I am with my friend Noreen.”
Congratulating St Michael’s PS on its 50th anniversary Lady Mary Peters said, “It’s always lovely to be invited back and it’s great to meet up with Michelle again. I never get tired seeing the enthusiasm of young people and I’m really inspired by seeing the teachers at St Michael’s are really encouraging the children to get involved in sport. Some people think sport and academia don’t go well together, but you can succeed in both.”
