A cast of over 40 talented young actors from the Rainbow Factory School of Performing Arts landed a rapturous standing ovation following their performance of Gold Medal Mary a new play with music which celebrates the early life of Munich Gold medallist Lady Mary Peters.

An original production written and directed by award winning screenwriter and director Máire Campbell it tells the story of the young Mary Peters from her family’s arrival in Northern Ireland at the close of World War II, through Mary’s teenage years and her quest for sporting greatness.
Set against the backdrop of a politically turbulent Belfast, Gold Medal Mary explores themes of resilience, ambition and determination through the eyes of a young Mary Peters striving to succeed against the odds and culminates in her pentathlon Olympic Gold Medal in 1972.
A sell-out audience at The MAC theatre in Belfast also enjoyed a post-performance Q&A session with Lady Mary, the cast members and director Máire Campbell. The event also helped to raise cash for the Mary Peters Trust through commemorative programme sales and donations.
