Congratulating local medallists and all our Team NI members who competed in Glasgow, Lady Mary Peters says,
“Huge congratulations to all our medallists. I’m so proud of you and everyone on Team NI as each athlete has given their very best whatever the outcome. I also commend our Commonwealth Games support team who have done a brilliant job and worked so hard to fully prepare the athletes for the Games. The results speak for themselves.
“It was really fantastic for Kate O’Connor to win our first Gold in Glasgow. We are so pleased for Kate, she has worked very hard – what an amazing result.
“I’m delighted for our bowlers who have put their all into the Games and have come away gold and bronze medals. Congrats to Gary Kelly and Adam McKeown in the men’s pairs on their wonderful gold, to Gary for his singles bronze and best friends Shauna O’Neill and Chloe Wilson in the Women’s Pairs who secured bronze.
“Our boxers as always have led the way with medals and this year is no exception with 6 in total; one gold, two silver and three bronze. Well done to Jon O’Connell, Michaela Walsh, Kaci Rock, Jude Gallagher, Garyn McAllister and Willie John McCartan.
“Our swimmers have excelled which is brilliant with Daniel Wiffen bagging a silver and Barry McClements who went one further than Birmingham securing a hard-fought silver.
“Bethany Firth coming back to the Commonwealths as a mum and winning a bronze is so lovely and I’m thrilled for Ellie McCartney also picking up a bronze.
“How fantastic for our judo team who added to the final tally towards the end of the Games with bronzes for Joshua Green and Rachael Hawkes.
“The atmosphere in Glasgow was exceptional, and I would like to pay tribute to the organisers who boldly came in at a late stage to save the Games and put on a fabulous show, exceeding everyone’s expectations. I also want to highlight all the officials and volunteers who really helped to bring the Commonwealth Games together.
“I’m thrilled that of our 65 strong Team NI, 80% of the athletes have been funded by the Mary Peters Trust. I’m proud of the whole team – they are wonderful ambassadors for our wee part of the world.”
