Two thousand pounds has been raised by the NI Tug of War Association following their hugely successful World Indoor Championships held at Templepatrick’s Jim Baker Stadium, 8 -10 March.
The Championships drew competitors from across the globe including the USA, the Netherlands, Chinese Taipei, Italy, Latvia, Nigeria, the Basque Region and China as well as home squads from Scotland and Ireland.
The event was livestreamed to over 20,000 people worldwide and brought in around £300,000 to the local economy. It also attracted extensive print, broadcast and online coverage including a special feature on BBC’s The One Show.
Organisers raised cash for Mary’s Trust through spectator collections at competitions during the event as well NI Tug of War Association donations.
Nelson Hanna from NITOWA said, ‘We had a fantastic four days, and it was an honour to welcome so many international friends, competitors and coaches. We’d like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, pullers and everyone involved both on and off the field. Of course, we’re thrilled to have raised funds for the excellent Mary Peters Trust which does so much to develop the talents of our future athletes.
‘We were also delighted that Lady Mary came along to support the Championships and presented medals to some of our winners.’
Team Northern Ireland’s medal haul included two golds, a silver and a bronze.
